Baltic TRANSCOAST Online-Seminar - Dr. Rebekka Artz (The James Hutton Institute, Scotland UK)

Abstract:

Scotland leads the world in terms of the area of peatlands that have undergone rewetting efforts, but this is against a history of drainage and land cover conversion that affects at least 50% of blanket bog and >90% of raised bogs and fens. The UK has ambitious climate mitigation targets and identified peatland restoration and adaptive management as key nature-based solutions. To this effect, over £300 million have been pledged for the next decade to improve peatland management. Key to making this a successful investment of public funds is a clear strategy for detection of current peatland condition, resilience and recovery. I will provide examples of ongoing research that utilises both our growing Scottish ground-based monitoring programme and Earth Observations, and how these feed into decision making processes and UNFCCC reporting.
