H1: Water and nutrient fluxes between coastal peatlands and the Baltic Sea
supervised by Janssen, Lennartz, Massmann, Ptak
Water and solutes are exchanged between coastal peatlands and the Baltic Sea by flooding of the peatlands and seawater intrusion on the one hand and submarine discharge of fresh groundwater on the other hand. These interactions are governed by hydraulic gradients and geological settings, and they influence the biogeochemical cycling of elements both on land and at sea. The main objective of this project is to assess water and solute fluxes across the coastline and to reveal the underlying processes. The tasks include field monitoring at coastal peatlands and a 2D modelling of water fluxes, solute transport and biogeochemical reactions at different cross-sections. Field work and modelling will be done in close cooperation with other PhD students.
