Ulf Mallast and Ajit Subramaniam (both Mercator Fellows in Baltic TRANSCOAST) will be offering three seminars on thermal IR and visible band remote sensing to those students who are interested in the topic.

Objective: 

The objective of this course is to introduce you to the remote sensing tools available and provide a hands on training on downloading the data, processing images and how to interpret them.

The hope is that at the end of this exercise you will know where to find the remote sensing data and how to process it to support your own research.

Details: 

The first session will introduce all the available sensors and platforms for Ocean Color and thermal remote sensing and will be presented by Ulf and Ajit. Time permitting, Ajit will also present some material on the physical principles of ocean color. Ulf will do the same on thermal imaging.

The second session will be focused on ocean color - Ajit will finish up what we did not cover on the first session and then show where to find the data, how to process the images, display and interpret etc. For the second session, the formal seminar will be about an hour but a lot of it will consisting of you downloading data, processing the images and manipulating the images on your own computer. Those who are done earlier can leave when they have a sense of how to find and download the data they want and how the software works. Ajit will stay as long as necessary to answer everyone's questions.

The objective of the third session is to introduce you to the remote sensing tools available and provide a hands-on-training on downloading thermal data, approaches to process the images and how to interpret them. The duration will be around 2 hours. If more time is needed Ulf will be glad to stay and to discuss all raised questions. For those who want to join the third course please download QGIS 2.14 prior to the course. This software will be the basis for our course.
