0135 Ecological functioning of coastal peatlands 

Low-lying peatlands with direct or indirect connections to sea waters play an important role in coastal ecosystems by buffering and transforming water and matter fluxes. Submarine groundwater discharge and/or sea water flooding may contribute to the intense exchange processes between ecosystem compartments. The prevailing plant communities on either site of the coastline may be directly linked to the water and nutrient exchange. Our understanding of the transport and exchange mechanisms along and across the coastline as well as the interaction with the biota is very limited especially if peat is the dominant stratum. The session seeks to bring together scientist coming from marine as well as from terrestrial sciences with an interest in coastal systems with the focus on water and matter fluxes including greenhouse gas emissions and biota interactions.
